Pre-School

Early Childhood Education from 1 to 3 Years – Freinet Expertise, Meres Continuity

Colegio Internacional Meres now offers a dedicated Pre School stage (ages 1 to 3), thanks to the integration of the renowned Freinet Early Childhood Centre, which brings over 20 years of proven expertise in early years education. This stage ensures families access to high-quality early learning from the very beginning, within a school that accompanies pupils all the way through to the age of 18.

A nurturing educational journey from the start

Our Pre School programme is designed to support the full development of each child in a caring, secure and stimulating environment. The foundation of our approach is based on play, exploration and emotional wellbeing.

Inspired by the active pedagogy of Freinet, our educational model is grounded in children’s spontaneous activity, curiosity and interests, helping them to grow confidently, creatively and independently from day one. Starting at Meres ensures a seamless and consistent educational pathway throughout their school life.

Child-centred methodology

We follow a respectful, active methodology based on three key principles: freedom, interest and activity.

Learning experiences are adapted to each child’s rhythm and stage of development, providing meaningful, age-appropriate learning in a well-structured setting. We foster close collaboration with families, built on open, ongoing communication. While classroom spaces are reserved for pupils and teachers, parents remain fully engaged in their child’s learning journey through regular updates and shared activities outside the classroom.

We’ve developed an original and distinctive educational project:

Educational Stage at Meres: Early Learning for Ages 1 to 3

Pre School at Meres covers children from 12 months to 3 years old, a vital stage in the development of emotional, motor, language and cognitive skills.

Children learn and play in purpose-designed classrooms, with carefully selected materials that stimulate autonomy, curiosity and sensory discovery.

By starting their educational journey at Meres, pupils benefit from a stable and continuous learning environment, all the way through to the end of Sixth Form.

Nurturing Foundations

Within our educational project, we highlight the following key areas for their relevance:

Bilingual EY's education

From day one, children are immersed in both English and Spanish. Our bilingual approach to early childhood education enables natural language acquisition through play and daily routines, taking full advantage of children’s ability to absorb languages during this stage.

Early stimulation

Our tailored early stimulation programme enhances each child’s natural abilities during their most sensitive developmental periods. We offer rich, varied activities—cognitive, motor, sensory and emotional—that support well-rounded, age-appropriate growth.

The team is exceptional, the care for the children outstanding, and the facilities are beautiful. They’re wonderful—without a doubt, the best pre-school education in Asturias. 100% recommended.

A Smooth and Supportive Transition to the Next Stage

The transition to the second cycle of Early Years (ages 3 to 6) is carefully planned to be smooth and natural. Children finishing this stage in Pre-School continue their journey within the same school environment, supported by an educational team that already understands their needs and strengths.

This continuity ensures a seamless adaptation and steady development, respecting each child’s individual pace and reinforcing their bonds with both educators and classmates.

Children aged 1 to 3 are not required to wear a uniform, as comfort is considered a key aspect of their development at this stage.
Nutrition is viewed as a fundamental part of children’s development and education. At Colegio Meres, meals are prepared daily in the school’s own kitchens, ensuring high quality, nutritional balance, and the ability to accommodate intolerances, allergies, and specific dietary needs.
The school offers two schedule options: Reduced day (9:00 to 13:00), which includes lunch; and Full day (9:00 to 17:00), which includes both lunch and an afternoon snack. Both options include school transport adapted to the specific needs of young children, and can be complemented by an early drop-off service from 8:00 to 8:45 to further support family routines.
At this early stage, communication with families becomes a key pillar of our approach. Open, ongoing channels are established to share children’s daily experiences, progress, concerns, and discoveries. Regular meetings and digital tools help foster a close and trusting relationship between families and the educational team. This active collaboration ensures personalised support and strengthens the connection between school and home as a foundation for each child’s overall well-being and development.
